Development & Analysis Of A UK Storm Indicator (part 9)
I continue turning the handle on wind speed data as gathered by 26 Irish weather stations since WWII. Today I devise an Irish stations windy day indicator.
I was rather pleased with the results derived using the “Magnificent 7” (Birr, Dublin Airport, Dublin Phoenix Park, Gurteen, Malin Head, Roche’s Point & Shannon); and have already confessed to being surprised at discovering what appears to be a slight but statistically significant decline in mean maximum gust speed over the period 1962 – 2021. With the daily, and therefore monthly, wind speed data from these long-series stations looking as clean and as reliable as we might reasonably expect (there is one among you – a brave fellow - wading through the purgatory known as CEDA as I type), I decided I might as well forge another of those storm indicators and see where this gets us.
The term ‘Storm’, as with ‘Named Storm’, is somewhat evocative; as is ‘climate change denier’, this phrase being provocative by nudge unit design. Being a gentleman scientist of independent means I don’t want to travel that road, and so shall endeavour to develop what I shall call a windy day indicator, even if…
