A sideways look at the longest instrumental record of temperature in the world
In part 2 of this series we took a look at a slide that may well be unique, being standardised scores for atmospheric CO2 and HADCET mean annual temperature since 1659. We saw a decent match that also offered up a conundrum in that four of the sixty year periods analysed failed to yield evidence of a statistically significant positive correlation between CO2 and temperature. Only since 1902 did a modest relationship appear (r = 0.381), this becoming stronger after 1962 (r = 0.667. We should note that strength of relationship in this context has nothing to do with absolute values for temperature CO2 and everything to do with them dancing in harmony.
